Ambient music, pedal demos, tutorials, and home studio recording techniques. Lots of reverb and delay pedals, exploring sounds and moods to create generative music with guitars, pedals, and VSTs.
About my music
The Humble Season is an ambient music project I created in 2012 that is strongly influenced by Hammock, Ólafur Arnalds, and Lowercase Noises. I create atmospheric soundscapes with guitars, a myriad of effects pedals, and several other instruments and sounds. I'm a multi-instrumentalist and I record all my own music. The sounds created are an exploration of emotions, moods, and unspoken moments; to slow down, breathe, and simply exist in the moment.

MTET (Midi to Expression Translator) by OBNE - Setup and Exploration
Переглядів 28311 місяців тому
I did a deep dive with setting up the new Midi to Expression Translator (MTET) by Old Blood Noise Endeavors on a live stream recently. This is the edited version if you want to learn how to use it with your pedals that have expression inputs but no midi. The MTET converts midi signals to expression values to give you more control over ramping the knobs that can be controlled by expression. It's...

Ambient Guitar with Thermae, El Capistan, & Microcosm
Переглядів 529Рік тому
I've been wanting to use Thermae more as my main delay, so I've been experimenting with the modulation settings, which are fantastic. Running that into El Capistan and letting the sound on sound tape loop slowly destroy it has been very pleasing to my ears recently. A bit of sparkle from Microcosm before hitting Polymoon and Mercury7 for stereo width is icing on the cake. My Discord: discord.gg...

I'm torn!
Can't go wrong with either one!
I love how every piece of gear has a story behind it. This dude is hardcore, so easy to tell the difference between a hack and a seasoned pro. Great interview Craig, really enjoyed it!
Thanks Dan! Yeah we easily could've spent the whole day talking about all the gear.
Very cool. As a bass player, I just recently got my first reverb pedal, the Chase Bliss Dark World, and I’ve been loving it. I’m amazed by how much fun ambient stuff I can make with just that one pedal! Doing some research now on some delay pedals as I’m considering adding one to the. Word for even more ambient fun!
Nice! I haven't played the Dark World yet but I definitely want to.
Really loved what you created here and with the slow ease ins with editing Craig ❤
Thanks Joan! Trying to use the things I'm learning in Resolve as I go.
@@CraigAllenMusicyup that’s exactly how you do it, every video
Definitely gonna use this for reference!❤
I liked this tour/interview a lot. You gave it all the time it needs. Nice!
Thanks man! It was so fun, I love being in studios and talking to people about their passion.
I loved this tour, thank you for doing this as I learned quite a bit
Glad to hear! Always happy to get the word out about awesome musicians.
Really beautiful
Thanks for listening! Trying out different formats. 1 minute ambient is weird lol.
@@CraigAllenMusic yea agreed, that’s why shorts are so so hard for me because I’m like with effects pedals you really need more then a minute for context. I really would like 2mins atleast with shorts but it is what it is. You could also feature single pedal explanations in the chain as the music plays so it’s educational for a looking to be more ambient player can hear the sound and with text know what’s at play to create what you’re doing. I’ve thought about that but I’m stretched thin already 😝
Great idea thanks!
Been trying to find some info on how to make this happen! Only challenge is I'm on Logic, not Ableton. Any insight on how a fella can line up all the things to make that work? I have very little experience with Logic or Midi, so it's been a struggle. Silly me thought it would be easier.
It's definitely possible in Logic, I know some people who have done it bit it was a lot more work. If I ever figure it out myself I'll make a video.
@@CraigAllenMusic I figured out a way to make it happen the other day. It's not perfect, but it does the job.
Oh cool! Yeah I think they could definitely make the process easier, but glad to hear you got it working.
I noticed you stopped posting videos 3 years ago. Any plans to start again? I'd love to see what you're working on.
Cool pedals!
Thanks!
Hey, when you did this, did you have all the secondary settings at zero for the beginning parts?
Probably not but I don't remember where they were at the time.
@@CraigAllenMusic It’s difficult to tell but I feel like the V1’s have more mojo to their sound in the videos I’ve seen. I also read that they used cheaper components in the V2’s but not sure if it’s true. Really want to get one but it’s a hard choice, sound is the most important for me but the midi preset option is so tempting. It’s a nightmare!!! 🤣
Yeah I hear you. Obviously the best thing would be to try them both yourself. I have heard some say they notice a difference in how they sound, to me it's not that noticeable but I assume they are slightly different. Newer is not always better so if you like the V1 then go for it, and at least you'll save some money. I will say I haven't used the midi stuff yet but I do like how they changed access to secondary functions on the new one. That for me has been worth it for the way I use it. Good luck!
@@CraigAllenMusic Cheers for the advice Craig. Maybe I’ll buy a V1 second hand and then order a V2 to test. Either sell the V1 on or send back the V2. You’re right, probably the only way to know. 🍻
from what i can tell, the v1 has more low mids than the v2, but the v2 is clearer sounding. the mojo factor is real and i love the warmth and fullness but also a big reason I end up dumping the v1 off my board often is those low mids. They sound cool solo’d but end up not always being so hot in a mix. The v2 likely fixes that problem; sounds more transparent, cleaner and more sculpted.
Yeah great analysis!
for me the V1 has something extra...just bought one ...i'll use it with vintage synths but your guitar work really shows the pure effects...nice work 👍🏻
Nice! They're both great and I wish I could've kept v1 honestly.
This was exactly the kinda inspiration I needed to rebuild my mega-board-spaceship-console ambient board after a long move. I"ll send pics when it's done! I've been satiated with just a simple Audio Kitchen The Small Trees boost>>Audi Kitchen Fake Plastic Trees>> Meris LVX >> MercX>>Boomerang 3 setup for months now but your breakdown has me excited to bust everything out. Beautiful sounds man, thanks
Sounds good! I actually need to do another update soon too.
Nice! I'm really interested in how to stack layers well and creating full, interesting and "organic" sounding ambient compositions with multiple independently moving layers through like parallel blending and sidechaining. I have the common problem of throwing everything at the canvas and not planning out and leaving space for dynamics. I was really into you separate looper placement. I need to mess with early chain loopers more. I have many of these pedals or similar. @@CraigAllenMusic
@winstonsmith8236 oh cool. Yeah I've tried doing parallel stuff and actually have a Matrise on the way. As soon as that gets hooked up I'll probably do a video on the full layout.
Which model is the pedalboard?
Pedaltrain-3!
Is the Microsm the last pedal in the chain? or how/where do you connect it?
It goes Microcosm, Polymoon, Immerse. I usually like it early in the stereo part of my chain.
That’s quite the board you got there!
Thanks!
Let’s freaking goooooo
Where?
Ignore the 🤡 comments above. This comparison is top notch. Bravo!
Thank you!
About the end of the chain, why not direct from the UA Dreams to the computer?
I've tried that as well. Sometimes it's nice to have an end of chain reverb after the amp.
@@CraigAllenMusicOK, thx
Thanks for the video. I'm doing some sessions in the studio, and I always wondered why would anyone use a DI Box at the end of their pedal chain? I genuinely want to know, just to make sure I'm not missing anything. I mean at least on the paper, all of such pedals are buffered when they're ON, and many of them are buffered anyway even when they're off. So, I wonder what would be the purpose of having a DI Box at the end of chain? At the beginning of chain it makes sense, to split the signal to have a parallel dry signal recorded for reamping and other uses. However, I'd appreciate it if you could explain what are the benefits of having one at the end? Also, why not the Radial JDI Stereo instead of the Pro D2? Cheers!
Yes, beginning would make sense for that purpose. At the end its because guitar cables lost signal over long runs, so by converting it and running the majority of the distance with XLR mic cables, less signal will be lost. Probably not a huge difference but might as well use it if I have it.
I'd love to get the stereo at some point but it's more expensive, that's the only reason.
By using the DI, you can use balanced cables at line-level, which are not prone to picking up noise like unbalanced guitar cables.
Hi it appears you took the Matrise off your board. Why did you decide to do that?
I ended up selling it. Took up a lot of room and I probably would've gotten a bigger board if I kept it. Also I just wanted to simplify things a bit.
Honestly all this shows is you need both 😂
You're right.
Super handy! I'm going to return to this when I take the plunge. 🤩
Thanks!
Bravo mi amigo. im sold. Thank you for putting this together.
Enjoy!
Excellent.
Thank you! Cheers!
Hi! How are you liking the V2? Any differences in tone that you notice compared to V1? Love the V1 sound but couldn't do wthout multiple presets. Im hoping V2 sounds exactly the same but with the added features.
Yeah to my ears the sound is pretty much identical. I think that was their goal, same pedal just with more features.
question... when I follow this correctly and choose to set heel and toe to MIX (rather than e.g. Delay) there's no numerical readout for Mix percentage when operating the expression... normal?
I don't know, sorry.
Thank you!!!
No problem!
Looks like you have changed a few things on the board from your older rundown. Specifically the Thermae > Blooper > Habit was the reverse order before. Can you share how you landed on that charge? Also looks like El Cap is pre-Microcosm now instead of using it as a end of chain tape delay. Do you like it better there?
Maybe you still have the El Cap after… can’t tell routing I guess
I'm always moving things around to try to find a better use for everything. Things have already changed since then as well. I'll post an update soon. But to answer your question about the Chase Bliss pedals, the Habit and Blooper are sometimes used as loopers and sometimes more as delays. So I switch the order depending on if I want Thermae and other effects to be captured in them for long loops or processed after them. Ultimately I recently got a Switchblade Pro which allows me to run 2 pedals or groups of pedals in parallel or series and I can also change the order. So hopefully that addresses the issue of switching things around as often.
Same thing with the El Cap and Microcosm because I use the looper in Microcosm. All the order switching comes down to what pedals I'm using to loop that day and what I want to either capture in those loops or hear after it.
From these comparisons I could not tell the difference. I do not know why but this demo does not make me want eiter. I am sure this unit is capable of more, mabye with some overdrrive. I have seen demos that make me want one. This is a trun off for me.
Cool
Thanks for doing this. Did you have to configure the Thermae to to receive the MIDI clock or does it automatically detect it so long as it's receiving MIDI through the cables and things are otherwise set up properly?
Once it's on the right midi channel it's good to go!
@@CraigAllenMusic Thank you!
Some tasty pedals indeed.
Lmfao that's like a $6,000 board right there.🤘🤘
